Baxter Black, Cowboy Poet

Baxter Black, The Cowboy Poet Podcast

Episode #024Baxter Black Cowboy Poet

Back in the 1980's, I had gone to the local community college and taken a couple of courses in radio production and board operation.  I pulled a short stint on the college radio station.  Then, I wanted to try my hand at being a "deejay".  I contacted a couple of stations and no one would talk to me.  I came up with an idea.  I called the lowest rated country station in town and boldly asked for the program director.  When he picked up the phone I asked, "How would you like to give your air staff Christmas Day off?"

"How am I going to do that?", he replied.  I knew he wanted be the good guy to his employees, so I told him I would work for him Christmas day IF he gave me a weekend shift in the new year.  He thought about it a moment and then told me to come down at midnight and spend some time with the overnight dee jay.  If I past muster with him, we had a deal.  After three or four nights working with Rick the overnight guy, I was pronounced ready.  Christmas Day, twelve-oh-one a.m. I flipped the mic switch and went on the air.  The program director had given me one instruction, "Try not to say too much."  Well, on today's show, I break that rule.

Today we have a very special show in a couple of ways.  First, we get to talk to Baxter Black, cowboy poet, writer, and well, cowboy.   And, I tell you how this interview came about.  If you've listened to this podcast in the past, you know I have a knack of getting myself in spots that are above my skill level.  This is one of those times.  It's a story of reaching a bit far, maybe a little to far, and while stretching out there, losing track of one's goals.  Anyway, no one died, and only one of us broke a sweat.  Here’s the story of what happened behind the scenes of the great Baxter Black Interview of 2014.  I hope you find it entertaining.

Baxter Black became a large animal veterinarian despite having poor grades.  He found his way onto the speaking circuit.  He wrote and performed commentary on National Public Radio.  He was on the Tonight Show with John Carson for heaven's sake.  He learned how to entertain people and he does a good job at it.  Yeah, I know what your asking, "How did he end up on your show?"  While I wonder the same thing, I can tell you he is a generous man in terms of his time and patience.  I know, because I place a lean on both.

Baxter Black, Cowboy PoetThe book I talk about in the podcast is called Lessons From a Desperado Poet, subtitled How to Find Your Way When You Don't Have a Map, How to Win the Game When You Don't Know the Rules, and When Someone Says it Can't Be Done, What They Really Mean is They Can't Do It.  It could be called a self-help book, but that might be selling it short.  It is chalked full of good ideas and motivation.  And, it's not just about business - it's about life too.

I would have like to have had him do a poem or give us a little recitation of one of his commentaries, but I while I was talking with him I realized that would have been like asking someone over to your house for dinner, then asking them to cook.  I just could not do that.

Horsemen's Reunion in Paso Robles

Horsemen's Reunion

Episode #023

The Horsemen's Reunion brings 20 prominent horsemen and women together to train forty 2 and 3 year old colts. We were fortuHorsemen's Reunionnate to get get to spend some time in Paso Robles last week for the Horsemen's Reunion.   Many of the horses belong to or are bred from the sires of Madonna Inn Quarter Horses.  Rowly and Cathie Twissleman began the event three years ago to not only bring the horsemen together, but to show the public and potential buyers how the colts are started.

While we didn't get to spend the whole week there, we did get to hang around for three of the six days.  I especially enjoyed the first two days.  There was a lot of action as the colts put the Horsemen to the test.  In the upcoming weeks we will have an extended interview with Martin Black and also a show about  Cowboy Mounted Shooting.

There were a lot of great demonstrations, some wonderful vendors, great food and music.  The audio was really tough.  I've done my best to improve and refine it as much as I could.  With all the background noises and the hustle and bustle of the show going on, I think it came out okay.  I wish I had been able to get around to all the horsemen.  They all had a lot of great information to share.  It was a lot of fun watching them work the horses and deal with the different situations.

We have a double interview on today's show.  First, from Australia, David Wilson winner of over 200 open Campdraft events and is the chairman of the Australian Stock Horse Society.  David will be coming to Bakersfield May 2nd, 3rd, and 4th to hold a Campdraft Clinic followed by a competition.  As Campdrafting is relatively new to the United States, it is important to learn about the sport and how it is scored and judged.  Then, once we have an idea of what we are doing we can go at it in live competition.

John Thomson, a breeder of Australian Stock Horses is one of the organizers and a driving force behind Bakersfield Campdraft CA.  John's group has teamed up with Rancho Rio Stables to have a weekend of extracurricular events including perhaps a Stock Horse Time Trial.  There is a stock whip demonstration scheduled.  David Wilson will give us pointers on how to crack the whip.  (John & I collaborated to produce a video on YouTube on how to introduce a horse to the stock whip)Food vendors and western and horse venders will have their wares on display for people to shop and enjoy.  The competition will provide buckles and a saddle to the winner.  There are also scheduled to be saddle blankets and other prizes available to competitors.  Honor Flight and Wounded Heroes will be on site and will benefit from the proceeds from the event.

Ride for a Cause Don Funke's Ride For The West

Ride for Cause

Don Funke Riding4Creation

Episode #021ride for cause

The are many types of activists and activism.  I've always admired people who, believing in a cause, act on that belief.  On today's show we talk to a man who will ride for a cause, Dr. Don Funke of Bozeman Montana. Don is preparing for a 1200 mile ride on horseback to bring awareness to environmental and social concerns affecting the west. Don feels quite passionate about his life in the west and calls this a pilgrimage he feels compelled to make. I won't try and go into the motivations here for his ride.  It's better you visit Don's website Riding4Creation .org and see for yourself.  Don is planning on leaving from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Bozeman, Montana on the back of a horse.  On the show we'll talk about the details it takes to ride for 1200 miles, his horses, and equipment, and how you can help if you like.  Don is planning on leaving from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Bozeman, Montana on the back of a horse.  He will be relying on the kindness of people along the trail as well as sharing his concerns about the American West.

My Parting Shot

And, we'll have a childhood memory I share in my Ride Into The Sunset.  Most people tell the story of how great their first experience with horses happen to be.  Mine involved much grumbling, a little yelling, and near disaster.
