Talking Team Roping with Champion Denny Watkins

I've been lucky enough to get a few freelance writhing assignments.  For my latest article I had an opportunity to do a sidebar on champion Team Roper Denny Watkins.  Denny made it to the NFR 19 consecutive years and still ropes as well as teaching roping to ropers of all levels.  Denny offers a great insight to the word of roping and with 40+ years of experience he has a ton of stories to tell.

Once again, it was an impromtu interview just before one of Denny's Team Roping practices.  You'll hear some background noise (sorry) of him getting his horses ready to work.

Denny has a series of short instructional videos on Vimeo VOD and Youtube.  Check out a couple of these links:

Gymnastic Jumping Lines with Lori VanSickel

Lori VanSickel is an eventing and Hunter/Jumper trainer and owner of Flying V Farms. On today's show Lori demonstrates how to use an exercise called gymnastic jumping lines to improve your equitation and your horses athletic ability.  But, before we get into the action, Lori's twelve year old daughter, Kayla, gives me a tour around Flying V Farms.

We also produced a video that more clearly demonstrates the use of gymnastic jumping lines and how to use them correctly.  You can find the video at:  Gymnastic Jumping Lines

A month after recording the podcast, Ranae and I went to Lori for an hour lesson and found it quite useful in helping us with our balance and equitation.  We would love to hear your thoughts.  Feel free to email us at: john@whoapodcast.com

The First US Campdraft Clinic and Competition

The US National Campdraft Association's first clinic and sanctioned competition is in the books and The Whoa Podcast about Horses and Horsemanship was there to cover it!  We grabbed our cameras and microphones and headed to Kiowa, Colorado under the sponsorship of the Australian Stock Horse Society.  The Australian Stock Horse is a relatively need registry here in the States, but the owners that have them brought them to Kiowa.

We speak first with Australian Campdraft Professionals and Clinicians Pete Comiskey and Steven Hart.  Then we get a real feel for the event by interviewing the particpants of the event.  And, because there were so many Aussie saddles there, I found a saddle maker, James Root, to tell me about his custom made saddles.

We would also like to thank the folks who took time to talk with us:  John Thomson, Kiki Pantaze, Paul Johnson, kellee Campbell, Linda Hingst, Blake Hingst, Tony Navarra, and James Roots.

Enjoy!

Teaching Your Horse the Stock Whip

We met with John Thomson and one of his Australian Stock Horses out at our local stable, Ranch Rio.  We spent about an hour filming a sequence John uses to desensitize his horses to the stock whip.  As a result you get a video podcast this week.

You can find more videos and podcasts on the website WhoaPodcast.com

We would love to hear your thoughts.

Our Cutting Horse Trainer Experience

It was part mutual wedding anniversary gift, part something we needed to do, and part something I wanted to do.  Ranae has no desires to do it competitively, but enjoys working around cows.  I think it is a great way to "change it up" for my horse.  I also wanted some advice on moving out of the snaffle.

With all that we headed out to a local trainer/manager of a feedlot to see just where our horses were in their training.  As it turns out, not nearly where we thought they were.  On this episode of the Whoa Podcast we tell you about our back to back lessons with trainer Robert Bias.

Do you think it's a good idea to see a trainer once in awhile?  If so, how do you choose a trainer?  Send you suggestions and experiences to john@whoapodcast.com.

Thanks for listening,

A Conversation with Horseman, Trainer, and Showman Matt Sheridan

Quite a few horsemen and trainers have stories to tell.  Not many of them tell those stories as eloquently and with purpose as Matt Sheridan.  Matt is a 5th generation horseman, a successful showman in almost every discipline, and an effective clinician.  Oh, and just a darn nice guy.

Matt stopped by our downtown studios about an hour away from his ranch, Matt Sheridan Performance Horses.  In part one of this interview we talk about Matt's early history training horses and breaking colts.  Matt gives us a little insight into how he developed his philosopy about training horses and how much he was influenced by a chance meeting with legendary horseman, Ray Hunt.  He also gives us a bit of free advice in working with our horses and expanding our knowledge.

Matt is part of the Project Cowboy show airing later this month on RFD-TV.  In part two of this interview next week, we'll break down the competition of Project Cowboy show and offer some behind the scenes insight that will give you some extra perspective of the competition.

Enjoy!

The Pre-Ride Checklist

Do you have a routine before you get on your horse?  C'mon, you don't just walk out there and toss the saddle on, cinch up and go do you?  On today's show we tell you about the routine we follow and how it works for us!

We think it is important to gauge your horse's attitude before you get on.  Like any creature they are going to have days where they feel better than others.  You need to know where there head is at.  It can give you a great insight to the type of ride you are going to have. It can also give you a heads up as to how much extra work you may have to do on the ride.

We're posting some pictures of a weekend ride I got to go on over the weekend so be sure to check out WhoaPodcast.com

Martin Black Joins Us to Talk About the Horsemen's Reunion

What if there were a colt starting competition that wasn't really a competition? What if there were 20 of the best horsemen/women from around the world who got together to start colts just like they would if they were on their own ranch? What if YOU could watch close up and personal?

On this week's show we speak with Martin Black, one of the producers of The Horsemen's Re-Union where these "What if's" turn into reality.  Martin tells us about this unique competition going on April 15th-20th on the Central Coast of California at the Mid-State Fairgrounds in Paso Robles.  You can see some of your favorite horsemen and clinicians start two colts each over a five day period.  You get to see how colt starting was meant to be.
